Pre- and Post-Procedure Instructions
Pre-Procedure Instructions
Goal: Prepare the skin and body to optimize results, reduce risks such as hyper- or hypopigmentation, burns, or delayed healing.
-
Sun & Tanning
-
Avoid direct sun-exposure (including tanning beds/spray tans) for 2-4 weeks prior to treatment.
-
Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen daily (SPF 30+ or higher) leading up to your appointment.
-
-
Topical Products & Treatments
-
Discontinue use of retinoids (Retin-A, tretinoin), strong exfoliants (glycolic acid, AHA/BHA), and other “active” skincare ingredients 1 week or more prior.
-
Avoid recent chemical peels, micro-needling, or other aggressive treatments on the area to be treated.
-
If you have a history of cold sores (herpes simplex) in/around the area, notify your provider — antiviral prophylaxis may be advised.
-
-
Medications & Supplements
-
If medically safe, stop or reduce blood-thinners (aspirin, NSAIDs), fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo, etc., as they may increase bruising or risk.
-
Disclose any medications (especially photosensitizing ones like doxycycline, minocycline) or medical conditions to your provider.
-
-
On the Day of Procedure
-
Arrive with clean skin: no makeup, lotions, oils, or sunscreen on the treatment area.
-
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the treatment zone.
-
Maintain hydration and avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before treatment.
-
-
Post-Procedure Instructions
Goal: Promote safe healing, protect skin from complications, and support optimal aesthetic outcome.
-
Immediately After Treatment
-
Expect mild redness, warmth, a sunburn-like sensation, possible swelling or pinpoint dark spots/crusting depending on depth.
-
Use cool compresses (for 10-15 minutes at a time) during the first 24 hours to reduce swelling/heating.
-
Avoid applying makeup, self-tanners, heavy creams, or exfoliants until your provider gives the go-ahead.
-
-
First 24-72 Hours
-
Avoid strenuous exercise, hot showers/baths, saunas, steam rooms, intense sweating or heat exposure.
-
Cleanse gently with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water; pat dry. Do not scrub or use a washcloth that irritates the skin.
-
Avoid picking, peeling, or scratching treated skin. Let crusts/exfoliation occur naturally.
-
-
Ongoing Post-Treatment Care (up to ~1-4 weeks depending on treatment depth)
-
Use a broad-spectrum mineral-based sunscreen (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide) daily and wear protective clothing/hats when outdoors.
-
Avoid tanning, tanning beds or heavy sun exposure until your provider confirms it’s safe.
-
Resume active skincare ingredients (retinoids, acids) only when cleared by your practitioner — typically after the skin barrier has restored.
-
Monitor for signs of prolonged redness, worsening pigment changes, blistering, or infection — contact your provider if concerned.
-
-
What to Expect & Follow-Up
-
Your skin may flake, peel or look patchy in the days following treatment — this is a normal part of the regeneration/healing process.
-
Results often continue to improve over weeks as collagen remodels and pigmentation normalizes.
-
Schedule and attend any recommended follow-up visits for assessment and next steps.
-
When to Contact Your Provider Immediately
-
Persistent or worsening pain, swelling, warmth, or discharge at the treated site
-
Blistering, open sores, or skin breakdown
-
Sudden changes in vision (if treatment near eye area) or any unusual neurologic symptoms
-
Suspected infection (fever, spreading redness) or abnormal pigment changes
-
