When we age, several changes occur over a period of time.
Fat pads are what gives our face volume. From as young as 30, these start to shrink in size and decline down the face in a medial direction. The first signs of this tend to occur in the malar fat pad (pictured). This causes separation at the lid-cheek junction, which can give the visual of a tear trough.
Bone resorption causes structural changes. Our eye sockets change shape, the nose flattens and the tip drops, and the jawline turns from a “L” shape into an “\” shape. Loss of bony support, along with volume loss from fat pads, cause the skin to sag because it has lost the underlying support structures.
Muscles become weaker and can also become visible in the platysma (neck bands).
The skin also loses its elasticity. Aging occurs in a downward and medial direction. This is why we get heaviness on the nasolabial fold and jowls, along with these two fat pads getting larger/ repositioning when we age.
Anti-wrinkle injections can soften dynamic lines, dermal fillers can replace lost volume and skin treatments can help stimulate collagen synthesis and help tighten the skin. Surgery can also achieve results that we cannot achieve non-surgically.
